A Message from Toni Gossard ~ founder of
THE NATIONAL DACHSHUND RACES

Hello Weiner Lovers: While we have been around now for our 7th year and this season will be our 8th, we have faced many obstacles along the way but always seemed to come through. We know that our "2007" Race did not go as we had planned and for this, I personally apologize as the buck stops at my desk and we are well aware that many of you have traveled a LONG WAY to be here. For this, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. This event has raised a good amount of money for charity though it is expensive to hold in both time and money. Other than actual expenses and funds that reach their respective charities, funds from this event are never for personal use of any kind and I never plan on changing this policy. This is to be as it always has been, a day of family fun and money being raised for worthy causes.

In the early seasons, setting up this event (not that it was ever easy) was much easier than it has gotten to be especially in "2007" where we had severe flooding disrupt much of our area at the beginning of the month that took many weeks to recover from. I personally along with our friends at Hochstettler's Old Mill located at 428 West Main Street, Findlay, Ohio 45840 - phone number: 419-422-1951 and also with the help from donations from IAM's and generous people from Findlay and the surrounding areas, reached out to ensure that any family that lost their home or could not get out to shop, could get food for their companions and this was quite successful. Our thanks to IAM's, Hochstettler's Old Mill and all the people that graciously donated money and food for this crisis as without everyone's help, this simply could not be done.

It may seem odd to some and we know others may be somewhat disappointed; however, The National Dachshund Races had to take a good hard look at "2007" along with the feedback we received from our website at www.weinerrace.com, and make some hard decisions. For those that may have been here for the first time, we had a record breaking year by far for both entrants and people attending. In the past, the location we used adequately met our needs. Last year it was obvious that something had to be done as we were packed in, many volunteers that we count on, did not show and we quickly realized that this location as well as the availability of dedicated volunteers was no longer an adequate place to hold our event. We simply outgrew it and for this in one way was a blessing as charities made out well, but the ensuing hardships it caused both us running the event and for our guests, found it to be a trying day. Not the fun family event we wish to have.

Many of you may not know that I also operate the Dachshund Races at the Berea Oktoberfest each year with the final winner of that multi-day event racing the finalist from Findlay at the "Official" National Dachshund Race Event to reach a "Champion of Champions". Then after much communication and talking with friends, associates, our webmaster (who does participate in more than just the web design aspect) and the people who put together the Oktoberfest, light bulbs flashed and the idea came to take our event and bring it to the Cleveland Suburb of Berea and make this a "Circuit Event" where other Dachshund Race holders could (if our rules are strictly followed), participate in the "Champion of Champions" and make this the truly recognized National Dachshund Races Nationwide.

We prefer to stay with our many high standards as we see Dachshund Racing cropping up in many states and as there is no set standard, many have their Dachshunds run WAY too far and in conditions that if you reversed roles, you would not wish to run. Your Dachshund should be your companion first and racer second. A dachshund is simply NOT built to run long distances safely. They were breed to be badger dogs where they chase their prey into a hole and catch it or chase it out for the hunter. Their backs and overall build make them to prone to spinal injury, hip injuries and the dreaded Intervertebral Disk Disease - IVDD which is a devastating inherited disease of the spine that can leave your Dachshund paralyzed or even worse after very expensive surgery, the need to be euthanized. I get a lot of flack from those that say 35 feet is way to short. When I inform them of the inherent dangers associated with this, I hear time and time again, well they run for hundreds of yards in my backyard so what's the problem? Well the problem is simply that in your yard, the dog can run "AS HE/SHE SO CHOOSES" not forced to run 50 - 100 yards in many instances multiple times in a row or in high heat or I heard one race in Florida held it on the paved street where it was 102 degrees outside, very humid and the pavement was over 120. How would your bare feet feel running 50 - 100 yards on that surface?

We are aware this will leave some that cherished our Findlay event each year with some bitterness, however as we have clearly outgrown this facility, it is nowhere as easy to get to than the Cleveland area, and simply we found that the benefits far outweighed the downsides and we now have an "Official Sponsor" as The National Dachshund Races "2008" is proudly sponsored by Budweiser®.

So officially, The National Dachshund Races "2008" is happy to announce that this prestigious event will be moving to the beautiful Cleveland suburb of Berea, Ohio, where it will be one of the featured attractions in the city's Labor Day weekend Oktoberfest celebration. The Oktoberfest is held at the Berea Fairgrounds.

I realize that this may raise many questions from you, our guests and racers so feel free to Contact Toni Gossard at the Weiner Races or as we are redesigning our website to properly reflect ALL the changes coming as well as keeping a fun view with photographs and video of our events, please keep coming back for a look as it will be updated and pages added as quickly as possible.

Sincerely,

Toni Gossard
