Unwanted Pets end up in Unwanted Places!
A LOOOONG HELLO TO ALL OUR WEINER FANS AND THEIR COMPANIONS (you decide which is which)! Thankfully this webmaster is beginning to recover from a series of bouts with my disabilities. I sincerely apologize to all of you as I know quite well how devoted you are to Toni Gossard and The National Dachshund Races. I could not place here even if I attempted to, all of the MAJOR NEW and EXCITING changes and things learned through our growth and YOU the people whose advice we listen to carefully that await our friends - however I will try.
We look forward to a VERY EXCITING 2010 as many changes and updates are in store and ALL we feel are for the better! Not only will we have the Findlay Races, we will also have circuit races throughout the country that will make The National Dachshund Races the KING of all race events and hopefully our goal is to STOP the poorly run Dachshund Races that are held in areas of this country that unfortunately ARE geared for profit and NOT the safety of our fine companions! There are FAR to many of these and some in our own backyard!
The National Dachshund Races have been OFFICIALLY SANCTIONED BY: The IWDRF (International Wiener Dog Racing Federation). We are the first to be included in this group and having been founded by a true expert in the field of Dachshund Races held across the country, his reputation is well known and he is Shane MacDougall from "Wiener Takes All" (A Dogumentary)! All of our circuit races will be sanctioned as well as they will all follow The National Dachshund Races and the IWDRF Rules for SAFE Dachshund Events!
We have been asked why we started a "Circuit Race"? The answer is simple. There are FAR to many Dachshund Events across this country that DO NOT take the safety of our companions as well as their owners to a level that we feel strongly is inappropriate. Dachshund Safety should be everyone's main concern, NOT PROFITS! Remember the mindset when Greyhound Racing began? See what it has done in reality. It is that simple.
What are our main concerns revolving around a group that holds a Dachshund Race especially IF it is for charity? Again this is simple. Watch "Wiener Takes All" (A Dogumentary) or look hard at yourselves and think about some of the races you may have attended. We have seen and have documented races held after pouring rain where the Dachshunds splashed through puddles to get to the finish line. We have seen races that are FAR to long for a Dachshund to safely (and that is the key) to run as their long spines along with some genetic disorders (IVDD) are not uncommon and CAN cripple your companion. You may say and think that heck, my Dachshund runs around my yard all day. True, but that is on YOUR COMPANIONS TERMS NOT YOURS. A Dachshund is a Badger Dog that is designed to track, dig and kill a badger under the ground. This may include some running but again, only your companion knows what he or she can do. Our happy companions will in all likelihood do anything its owner wishes until it drops. That is a companions nature. At a Dachshund Event, we have seen many times our Dachshunds asked to run LONG DISTANCES time and time again with little rest in-between. This is unsafe plain and simple! Another problem is "makeshift equipment". We have seen wire used in a box as a starting gate where these Dachshunds that want to go can get a paw stuck and get injured. These same starting boxes (completely enclosed) sometimes are not properly sized being to short for a Standard Dachshund which could cause an injury. Running outdoors after a heavy rain is NOT SAFE! We have seen Horse Tracks used where the ground is full of ruts where again, they can stumble. One race we know of was held in 102 degree weather, outdoor and on the tarred pavement which was 112 degrees. Heck, I would run fast if it was my bare feet on that pavement! This list can go on and on however I think our point is clear. Standards ARE NEEDED to protect our companions!
We have been asked when we introduced this concept are we just being selfish or wish to come off as the best there is and nothing more for our own gain? ABSOLUTELY NOT! There are many Great Dachshund Race Events in this country. Unfortunately there are probably just as many (or more) bad ones. We are trying to promote "SAFETY FIRST AND FOREMOST" and to do this we would like to see ALL Dachshund Events follow standards that are tried and true through years of experience, experts in this field involved and just as importantly, YOUR INPUT! The National Dachshund Races has and will always be an event held to promote family fun, letting people learn about the breed as well as others and IS held for charity!
Many people across this country (as we get attendees from many States) ask us "How would I go about starting a Dachshund Race in our State". We are trying to simply help and in doing so, provide what we feel are the necessities and promote safety first and foremost and ensure that these races are for a good cause like rescues and charities - NOT PROFIT. Many of these people already have an operating race and see our point and wish to ensure that there are rules and the Dachshund (our beloved companion) is in NO DANGER and are asking for our help. We simply pass along our knowledge and expertise as well as our BRAND NEW EQUIPMENT to assist them in this massive endeavor so they can have a happy, safe event that DOES help Charities and Rescues alike.
What is the bottom line? Simple again! Here at The National Dachshund Races we have ALWAYS and will ALWAYS remain transparent about our rules and regulations. We wish these circuit events to follow these same rules to ensure our Companions Safety!
You state that you are OFFICIALLY SANCTIONED BY: The IWDRF (International Wiener Dog Racing Federation). Why is this so important and what about another sanctioning body that may come along? As stated before, Shane is an expert in this field and we have NO direct tie to his agenda other than to say that he has started this Federation to promote SAFE Dachshund Events across this country. His group is also transparent. Nothing hidden about his agenda or rules. We happen to closely match HIS criteria and meet HIS Standards. If another organization wishes to also do this, so be it. We only ask that they be as transparent in EVERYTHING they do and wish to know what are their rules and what are their sanctioning requirements. Are they for the Dachshunds benefit or their own agenda! All we are asking is IF you decide after seeing another race or group that states it is sanctioned, check it out thoroughly for yourself and if you believe their intentions are honest and forthright, we will never discourage you from going to these events and will respect their decisions and sanctioning. We just STRONGLY feel that the buck must end somewhere and we hope that our tried and true history speaks for itself! You are the one to judge!
The biggest change to expect is that we now are "Officially Sponsoring" a National Circuit Event and have several states signed up with many more waiting due to our ability to bring them all onboard! This is extremely exciting news as our hope is one day have ALL 50-STATES involved! Our main finale is the place of all places and more on that as I can officially release the information but rest assured, it is well worth the wait! I was quite impressed when I learned of it and my wife and I WILL be there and at as many events that we can attend.
